Cast your vote for the Greatest Irish Novel

As spring time slowly but surely eases in and the days get longer the Dreaming Armadillo is launching its very first online poll. With the resurgence of interest in the works of Flann O’Brien (See “The Renaissance of O'Brien's lost legacy” post of 28 February) and the Beckett festival currently being held simultaneously in Dublin and London what could be more topical than a poll to find the greatest ever Irish novel.

The nominations can be for any novel by any writer from the island of Ireland, living or dead, from any era.

In the spirit of the recent polls on Slugger O’Toole to find the greatest Irish man/woman and greatest Ulster man/woman and the Levee Breaks poll on Northern Ireland’s greatest place, the survey is not intended to be taken too seriously, so humorous or tongue-in-cheek votes will be as acceptable as the serious ones.

So please post your nominations here!

Not sure, give me time to think. McGahern and Banville have got to be on that list... Though I suppose if we are talking the greatest then it's got to be Joyce... I'll have a think and get back to you

That's ok Aine - no hurry! I quite like McGahern as well - Among Women, the Barracks, The Dark and The Pornographer all spring to mind. Brian Moore, being of the same generation as McGahern might also feature on my list. I think Joyce may feature quite heavily here, but to my great shame I haven't read any Banville. Yet another item to put on my ever-expanding 2006 reading list!

Well since I have the mind of a child... The Chronicles of Narnia, C.S Lewis if you please. I suppose it'll have to be The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, if you want to narrow it down to one.
