Appeal for peace in the Middle East

As the conflict between Hezbollah and the Israeli forces goes on, MacDara, the Irish blogger formerly based in Lebanon, but now safely back in Ireland tells the story of his evacuation, while sparing a thought for those innocent civilians stranded in Lebanon.

Hat tip to Cyberscribe for the link.

I won't get sucked into the partisan blame culture of saying who's right and who's wrong here. Hezbollah has certainly paticipated in barbaric acts of terrorism, but Israel's response has been disproportionate. It is ordinary civilians who suffer not the Hezbollah leadership. Without forgetting the ongoing situation in Iraq, where sectarian violence continues, let’s hope it all ends very soon.

As an Irishman, have you ever seen the little people? and are you a member of a paramilitary group?

No, to both questions.

Call me cycnical if you like, but I belive that Hezbollah were fully aware of the possible consequences of their actions for the people of the Lebanon. And that makes them far more cycnical than I, and really contemptible.

Well said Northernsole, what I find really sickening right now is the call by the political wing of Hizbollah that we should witness what Israeli democracy has done (to them). Not only cycnical, but so blind to their own (Hizbollah's)responsibility in this and full of childish attempts to blame everyone except themselves. Ach, I'm so sickened by this. Until recently the Palestinians had my understanding and to some extent sympathy. That came to a end in the past week. They really believe that the world doesn't see the hands, power-mongers, and manipulators behind Hizbollah's actions. Please.... they think we all came down in the last shower. Sorry, just a bit furious about this..

It's interesting to read treppenwitz an award winning blogger from Israel. The blog post "A difficult lesson" and the continuing comments over the last week about it.

regardless of what you think of Hezballah or Hamas please dont put the ordinary Lebanese or Palestinians into the same box. Having lived there i can asure you most of the people are now suffering because of the actions of a few.

Macdara
I don't doubt this. Equating ordinary Palestinians or Lebanese with Hamas or Hezbollah would be like putting ordinary Irish people in the same box as the IRA or equating all Basque people with ETA. In areas where terrorism holds sway, it is often innocent people from within these communities who bear the brunt.
